Check out this information on art therapist's salaries from the American Medical Association. When it comes time to negotiate your salary for your first job, it will be helpful to have this information to back you up.

grants

Hi everyone

I just came across this foundation that supports community service organizations through grants. This is one way art therapists have developed positions at sites that have not historically had art therapy services.

Circle of Service is a private foundation that makes grants to support great organizations to enhance community, opportunity and well-being. We believe that challenge grants are powerful tools in the fundraising toolboxes of the organizations we support, and strategies from our grant recipients confirm this. Accordingly, most of our grants have a challenge component.

We welcome grant applications both for specific programs and for general operating support. Each of our grants generally can be categorized in one of our Focus Areas:

Community Giving
Our Community Giving program supports organizations in Cook County and Lake County, Illinois that help individuals become self-reliant or that help individuals who are unable to help themselves.

Education
Our Education program supports organizations that enhance educational opportunities for low-income youth in Chicago to enable them to lead productive lives.  If you are a youth development program located outside Chicago, you do not fall within our Education focus area, but please review our Community Giving focus area. We are currently not accepting applications from individual charter schools or charter management organizations.

Jewish Community
Our Jewish Community program supports organizations that honor the past and strengthen the future of the Jewish Community.  Jewish Community grants to organizations outside Cook County and Lake County, Illinois are by invitation only.

Medical Research
Our Medical Research program supports organizations that seek to advance scientific and medical research focused on the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure of cancer and other diseases.  Medical Research grants are by invitation only.

Chicago Bridge Mentorship program

Hello,

To follow up on Katharine's post-- after you have joined the 'Chicago Bridge group for emerging professionals in the field of aging,' get started quickly and fill out an application to be in their mentorship program: http://www.thechicagobridge.org/mentorship-program/

The application has a deadline of March 1st. They want you to send a resume and to fill out 1 page of questions about how you'd make use of a mentor and stuff. It took a little bit of time, but the questions feel like exactly the kind of stuff we will be answering in P. Dev class anyway.

I don't know how many AT Mentors will be available, but I think it's a good idea to learn what you can about other areas of elderly care. The opportunity to have someone experienced coach you on job applications and networking could be super valuable for those of us who plan on entering the work force this coming May.

Good luck!

Chicago Bridge

Hi everyone,

For anyone who may want to work with older adults, I recommend joining Chicago Bridge:

http://www.thechicagobridge.org/

It is a group for Chicago emerging professionals interested in the field of aging. They have great lectures/discussions, a mentorship program, and other events. There is a networking event coming up soon. Sophie, Theresa, and I joined and are loving it so far.

Job Websites

Hello Friends,

I was at a brunch meeting for IATA a couple of weeks ago and there was a really helpful discussion among those of us getting ready to look for jobs and those actively looking for jobs about websites that were particularly helpful in the search:

www.indeed.com
www.idealist.org
www.npo.net
www.careerbuilder.com

Some of them focus on non-profit work while others like "indeed" advertise art therapy specifically. Another tip I gleaned from the discussion encouraged use of various search phrases in addition to "art therapist." Things like "counselor" and "creative arts" tend to turn up jobs that relate to our area of interest as art therapists as well.

Hope this is helpful!

-Amy

NPO.net - Chicagoland non-profits

Hi y'all.

Here's a job search site some of you may already know. It's strictly for jobs at non-profit organizations in the Chicagoland area. http://www.npo.net/

I don't think I have ever seen an art therapist job posted, but there are usually a lot of masters level counseling or therapy jobs, ones in which art therapy could be incorporated, such as this one.

Good luck!
