Sexual Assault Training and Volunteer Opportunity

If you're interested in getting trained in Sexual Assault crisis intervention (40 plus hrs. ICASA approved training) and are looking for a volunteer opportunity this summer, check out Rape Victim Advocate's upcoming training in June (training starts June 1st). The training gets you a certificate and provides you with the skills to be one of RVA's volunteer medical advocates. Medical advocates cover a few shift per month and respond to calls at local hospitals when sexual assault survivors come into the hospital. I did the training last summer for Girl/Friends and it was really wonderful! For more information, check out RVA's website:

All in the mind

In the UK there is a radio station called BBC Radio 4. Every few months they run a weekly series called Medical Matters: All in the mind which explores "the limits and potential of the human brain". The topics it covers can be really interesting and relevant. You can subscribe for free through itunes podcasts. Alternatively, you can view the following link, which is also free:

web site on photo and video therapy

Like the sites I mentioned in the last post, the Photo Therapy Centre web site is also self-promotional. But I don't have a problem with this one because the self-promotion is transparent. And besides the self-promotional aspect, it has a fabulous bibliography on the use of photography, video and film in therapy. Check it out here:

web sites on art therapy -- consumer beware!

There are some web-based art therapy organizations I want to tell you about that are sources of some good information, but also somewhat deceptive in nature. They are Art Therapy Without Borders, the Art Therapy Alliance, and the International Art Therapy Organization. They are all linked to each other, so if you go to one site (for example, the one below), you can easily get to the others. They were all initiated and continue to be managed by the same two art therapists. The great aspect of them is that they have interesting information on them about the art therapy field and what is going on in art therapy around the world, and they do provide the means to link with art therapists from around the world. The caution I have about them is that they are highly self-promotional, which is problematic because the self-promotion is not transparent, so the sites are deceptive. For example, the Art Therapy Without Borders site promises to give you definitions of art therapy from various sources. If you click on the link to those promised definitions, you get 4 sources: two of them are from the above mentioned websites and two more are quotations from books by the same author ... who also happens to be one of the creators and managers of all three web sites! In other words, all four sources are from the same two people. That deception aside, they do provide the benefits I've listed, as well as a downloadable e-zine on international art therapy. So definitely check out these sites, but be a critical consumer while doing so.

Go to the web site below to view 4 counselor position openings in Cook County that are National Health Service Corps approved sites, which means you can get up to $60,000 of loan repayments if you remain employed at the site 2 years past getting your LPC. Quite a deal!

Chicago Freedom School Trainings

Chicago Freedom School also offers trainings.
I think I'm going to do the "Adultism" training on April 30th if anyone wants to join.

ADULTISM

Adultism is a form of oppression that privileges adults over youth and children. It perpetuates age-based stereotypes that limit the potential for intergenerational power-building. When people practice adultism, young people are viewed as objects instead of resources. This training will help adults learn more about how to dismantle adultism culturally, institutionally, interpersonally, and personally. Participants will be challenged to learn what they can do to be an ally to young people.

The next adultism training is:

Saturday, April 30, 2011
11 am – 2 pm
CFS Center for Social Change, 719 S. State St., Ste. 3N

Pre-registration is required. Complete the registration for the Adultism training online here.

I want to do their Anti-Racism Training for White Allies, but it happens to fall on graduation day. Maybe next time. Here's the link:

Job Opportunity: Summer Instructor at Chicago Freedom School

Job Opportunity:

2011 Summer Instructor

The Chicago Freedom School is seeking instructors who will design and lead 24-hour courses for youth ages 14 – 17 enrolled in the 2011 Freedom Fellowship Summer Leadership Institute. Instructors will design creative and engaging 1-week courses that emphasize the real life experience of young people as well as address a pressing social justice issue. The teaching week is August 1 – 5, 2011. The deadline for proposals is May 13, 2011. If interested, please download the Request for Course Proposals.

About Chicago Freedom School:
The Chicago Freedom School provides a space where young people and adult allies can study the work of past movements, deepen their understanding of current social problems, build new coalitions and develop strategies for change. We support new generations of critical and independent thinking young people who use their unique experiences and power to create a just world.

We envision a world that supports, respects and values the work and perspectives of young people. We see communities filled with youth and adults who engage with one another about ideas that matter the most to them and who learn and grow from this engagement. We believe that the world can learn from its mistakes and it can be free of all forms of oppression.

Post-Grad Fellowship - Womencare

Here is info on the postgraduate fellowship program at Womencare counseling in Evanston. You need to have 1-5 years postgrad psychotherapy experience, so this would be something to consider for next year or later. Even if you're not interested in the fellowship, I would recommend checking out Womencare. They offer "Therapy for the Therapist" and lots of other professional training events.
