Rosa Parks Art Studio - Detroit

Some of you know I recently went to Michigan to visit my husband's aunt, who is a Catholic nun. While I was there, she mentioned that her friend and fellow sister, S. Nancyann Turner, is an art therapist in Detroit. She works at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and runs the Rosa Parks Art Studio. The program includes regular art therapy groups, a yearly Peace Camp, and a community garden. They also mentioned that S. Nancyann is getting older and looking to retire from her position soon, so she may be looking for a replacement.

I am not looking to move to Michigan (at least not yet), so I thought I would pass the info on. If any of you are considering moving to the Detroit area and would like to know more, I'd be happy to inquire on your behalf.

Here's a little bit about the program.

Reducing and Deferring Student Loans

I did some research on possibly reducing the amount and/or deferring my loans after school. I'm not sure if my situation warrants applying for this, however I still think its still extremely useful to know.

It's the governments loan forgiveness for Public Service Employees. If anyone else has some insight on this it would be great.

Here is some additional information:

The borrower must be employed full time (in any position) by a public service organization, or must be serving in a full-time AmeriCorps or Peace Corps position. For purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, the term “public service organization” means –

- A federal, state, local, or Tribal government organization, agency, or entity (includes most public schools, colleges and

universities);

- A public child or family service agency;

- A non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code that is exempt from taxation under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code (includes most not- for-profit private schools, colleges, and universities);

- A Tribal college or university; or

- A private organization that is not a for-profit business, a labor union, a partisan political organization, or an organization engaged in religious activities (unless the qualifying activities are unrelated to religious instruction, worship services, or any form of proselytizing) and that provides the following public services –

- Emergency management;

- Military service;

- Public safety;

- Law enforcement;

- Public interest law services;

- Early childhood education (including licensed or regulated health care, Head Start, and state-funded pre-kindergarten);

- Public service for individuals with disabilities and the elderly;

- Public health (including nurses, nurse practioners, nurses in a clinical setting, and full-time professionals engaged in health care practioner occupations and health care support occupations);

- Public education;

- Public library services; and

- School library or other school-based services.

Higher Ed Jobs

Here is a good site to use to search for college and university level job postings:

You can search by either job type or state. There are a lot of counselor and research jobs opening up at this time.

Good luck!

Flourish Studios

I happen to come across Flourish Studios for a friend's art opening. Little did I know that it was also a store and a space where five therapists hold therapy. I started talking to the owner who is also a practicing psychotherapist, Julia, and found that she is a BIG supporter of art therapy. (Maybe she will want one on her team someday?!) She gave me a tour of their beautiful space where workshops, acupuncture and networking groups are held. She is going to send me information about a group that is held for new therapists starting out in the field. When I get the information, I'll be sure to pass it on. ALSO! They just started an artist in residence program. 8)

Free Business Cards!

Free, you say?!

This is a rather shady lookin' deal. However, it could serve you well! I've ordered some business cards from here and it is, indeed, free. You just pay for shipping. The rub is that there are limits to designs you can use, pre-set things. Enjoy!

Attn: Bilingual art therapists

Just saw this job posting for Heartland Alliance. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish or an Indian language such as Hindi or Guajarati is required.

http://www.npo.net/job/2011-02-25/22613?p=1

The position is "mental health clinical practitioner," working with international youth. Although "art therapist" isn't the official title, sounds to me like a position where you could use those skills.

Artist Trust: Washington state resource

Hi all,

If any of you are planning to move to Washington state, take a look at the Artist Trust website. Artist Trust is a wonderful organization that provides grants for artist projects (many of which have relational/community angles that would be a great fit for art therapists), great events, lectures, and other support and resources for artists (i.e. obtaining healthcare, legal services, etc.). Artist Trust is really well-known in Washington (at least in Seattle) and helps launch the careers of many great local artists.
